Fresh Missile Exchanges Mark U.S.–Iran Slide Toward Open Conflict Over Israel War

Tel Aviv · Tehran · Washington, D.C. — The United States and Iran appear to be entering a new and dangerous phase of direct confrontation, with back-to-back missile strikes, heightened proxy activity, and a collapse in regional diplomacy.

On Tuesday night, the U.S. military reportedly carried out a stealth strike targeting a suspected ballistic missile storage facility in southern Iran, believed to be linked to recent attacks on U.S. forces and Israeli territory.

In response, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivered a televised address condemning the U.S. action and warning that “a harsh and irreversible response” would follow. Iranian state media confirmed that the country’s ballistic units and regional proxy forces have been placed on full alert.

Details of the Escalation

The current confrontation stems from a cascade of events over the past 72 hours:

  • U.S. Air Force B-2 bombers launched precision strikes against Iranian underground facilities tied to uranium enrichment in Isfahan and Fordow during Operation Midnight Hammer.
  • Iran retaliated by firing a volley of missiles at Al‑Udeid Air Base in Qatar, home to thousands of U.S. personnel. Although no casualties were reported, the strike marked a rare direct attack on a major American installation in the Gulf.
  • In the latest development, U.S. stealth aircraft reportedly targeted Iranian weapons convoys and supply hubs believed to support operations by Hezbollah and Houthi militias in the region.

International Fallout

The strikes have triggered alarm across the region and beyond.

  • Qatar condemned the use of its territory in the military confrontation, warning of regional destabilization.
  • European Union diplomats called for an emergency Security Council session, warning that continued strikes could ignite a regional war.
  • China and Russia issued coordinated statements blaming the United States for “reckless aggression” and calling for immediate de-escalation.

Meanwhile, Israel has raised its alert status to the highest level since the Gaza War of 2023. Military exercises in northern Israel suggest preparation for multi-front conflict, especially against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

U.S. and Iranian Messaging

The White House insists that U.S. actions are strictly retaliatory and proportionate. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien stated, “The President will take all necessary steps to defend U.S. forces and regional allies from clear and immediate threats.”

Iran, however, has described the attacks as “part of a wider campaign to cripple Iranian sovereignty,” with state media labeling the U.S. operations as “acts of war under international law.”

What’s at Risk

  • Further military engagement: Both nations claim to seek deterrence, but continued tit-for-tat strikes increase the likelihood of escalation by miscalculation.
  • Collapse of diplomacy: Talks in Vienna over Iran’s nuclear program have been suspended. Multiple European envoys have left Tehran amid rising security concerns.
  • Global economic impact: Oil prices surged past $106 per barrel on fears that the Strait of Hormuz—through which a fifth of the world’s oil flows—could become a conflict zone.

The U.S. has already repositioned naval assets to protect shipping lanes, while Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has begun naval exercises near Hormuz.

Proxy Forces on Alert

  • Hezbollah in Lebanon has reportedly begun moving short-range rockets into launch positions near the Israeli border.
  • Kata’ib Hezbollah in Iraq has issued statements pledging “vengeance for American aggression.”
  • Houthi forces in Yemen have launched drones toward Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea corridor, signaling their readiness to escalate.
