Claims of ‘Deep State’ Resurface as Critics Say Congress Is Compromised

May 14, 2025 — Washington, D.C.
Accusations against the so-called “deep state” gained renewed traction this week as several political influencers and commentators claimed that the vast majority of Congress and the Senate are “compromised.” The remarks reflect ongoing distrust in federal institutions, particularly among segments of the America First and MAGA-aligned movements.

One such viral statement circulated on X (formerly Twitter), declaring, “This is the deep state in action. If you’re new to this side of the fight, you will learn that 98% of our Congress and Senate are compromised.”

Though unsubstantiated, these claims echo rhetoric that has intensified since investigations into FBI conduct, censorship allegations, and classified document handling became public issues during and after the Trump presidency.

Experts Warn Against Disinformation

Analysts warn that sweeping generalizations about corruption or compromise in Congress can undermine public trust in democratic institutions without evidence. “Labeling the majority of elected officials as compromised without proof only feeds into dangerous disinformation,” said Jared Holt, senior analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

Still, a growing number of Americans — especially on the political right — express skepticism about what they view as elite collusion between federal agencies, Big Tech, and global interests.

Investigations and Institutional Criticism Ongoing

While there are legitimate investigations into influence and misconduct — such as the House Judiciary’s inquiry into FBI censorship and the Durham Report’s criticism of the Trump-Russia probe — no official findings suggest mass compromise of elected officials.
