“What God Are You Praying To?”: Faith Leaders and Conservatives Slam Biden Over Abortion Stance

Washington, D.C., May 2025 — President Joe Biden’s long-standing support for abortion rights continues to provoke outrage among conservative Christians and pro-life advocates, many of whom question how the self-described Catholic reconciles his faith with policies they view as morally indefensible.

The latest firestorm ignited after Biden reiterated his commitment to federal protections for abortion access during a speech at a reproductive rights summit last week, drawing harsh criticism from religious leaders and grassroots conservatives alike.

A viral comment that has captured widespread attention stated bluntly:
“What god are you guys praying to that supports Joe Biden’s abortion stance? Your god likes babies murdered before they are born? Is your god called Satan?”

This pointed remark, shared across platforms from Facebook to Truth Social, reflects a growing sentiment among critics who see Biden’s policies as not just political but spiritually bankrupt.

Clash Between Faith and Policy

President Biden, the nation’s second Catholic president, has frequently cited his faith in public addresses. Yet, his support for legal abortion — including expanded access and protection under federal law — has long put him at odds with Catholic doctrine and many devout Christian voters.

“The disconnect is profound,” said Father Thomas Reilly, a Catholic priest and author based in Pennsylvania. “You cannot claim to follow the teachings of Christ and also defend the killing of the unborn. It is the greatest moral contradiction of our time.”

Evangelical leaders have echoed similar concerns, accusing the Biden administration of betraying biblical values in favor of progressive ideology.

Biden’s Position: A Long and Controversial History

Biden’s views on abortion have evolved over his decades-long political career. Early in his Senate years, he supported the Hyde Amendment, which restricted federal funding for abortions. But in recent years, under pressure from progressive allies and women’s rights groups, Biden has reversed that stance and aligned fully with pro-choice advocates.

In 2022, he condemned the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, calling it “a tragic error rooted in political extremism.” Since then, his administration has worked with Democratic lawmakers to introduce federal legislation aimed at restoring abortion rights nationwide — a move fiercely opposed by pro-life Americans.

Religious America Responds

The response from religious institutions has been firm. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has repeatedly criticized Biden’s policies, and some parishes have even denied him communion.

“Abortion is a non-negotiable issue,” said Bishop Miguel Ortega of the Midwest Archdiocese. “This isn’t about party politics. It’s about basic moral truth. Supporting the legalized killing of unborn children places a person outside communion with Christian teaching.”

Faith-based organizations like Focus on the Family and Students for Life of America have launched renewed campaigns to challenge what they call “the spiritual hypocrisy” of abortion-supporting politicians who claim religious affiliation.

Democrats Push Back

Democratic strategists argue that Biden’s position reflects the will of the majority of Americans, particularly women, who believe in bodily autonomy and access to healthcare.

“President Biden is standing up for individual freedoms,” said political advisor Rachel Newman. “He doesn’t believe the government should be making decisions for women and their doctors.”

Progressive faith groups like Faith in Public Life have also defended the President, arguing that faith can coexist with support for reproductive rights.

But among traditional Christian voters, those arguments fall flat.

A Political and Spiritual Divide

This clash reflects a deeper cultural divide in America — one where religion, politics, and morality are tightly interwoven.

Polling by Pew Research Center shows that 73% of white Evangelical Protestants oppose abortion in all or most cases, while 63% of Black Protestants and 55% of Catholics believe it should remain legal in most or all cases — highlighting a complex split even within faith communities.

Still, Biden’s critics remain unswayed.

“Abortion isn’t about choice,” said pro-life activist Jenna Hayworth. “It’s about life. And if your god supports abortion, then that’s not God — that’s something darker.”

Conclusion: A Crisis of Conscience

As Biden gears up for the 2024 campaign, his abortion stance remains a moral lightning rod — drawing passionate defense from progressives and equally passionate condemnation from conservatives and religious groups.

For many of his critics, it’s no longer just about politics or policy. It’s about what kind of spiritual authority — if any — guides the man who leads the nation.
