Kyiv, Ukraine — As the war in Ukraine continues into its third year, calls for international support are growing louder — not just in the form of funding and weapons, but through direct combat participation. Supporters from around the globe are being urged to “kit up and join the front lines,” as Ukrainian officials and foreign volunteer groups encourage those who stand with Ukraine to take action beyond social media posts and symbolic gestures.
Ukrainian military units have repeatedly welcomed foreign fighters into the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine — a formal combat wing made up of non-Ukrainian volunteers.
“If you believe in democracy, freedom, and defending the oppressed, you should feel compelled to join us — not just in spirit, but on the battlefield,” said Lt. Colonel Oleksandr Petrenko of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Thousands have already taken up that challenge. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, more than 20,000 foreign nationals from over 50 countries have applied to join the Legion since early 2022. While many volunteers come from the United States, the UK, Canada, and the Baltic states, soldiers of conscience from countries as far as Brazil, Japan, and South Africa have also enlisted.
“Talk is cheap,” said James Porter, a former U.S. Marine who now trains new recruits on the Ukrainian front. “The Ukrainians are fighting for the future of Europe — and arguably the world. They’ll gladly accept any serious help.”
A War That Won’t Fade
The brutal conflict, sparked by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has claimed over 500,000 lives according to U.N. estimates and displaced millions. Despite global sanctions on Russia and continuous military aid to Ukraine, the war remains entrenched, with devastating consequences for civilians and soldiers alike.
In recent months, Russian forces have made incremental gains in the Donbas region, prompting fresh calls for reinforcements.
“We don’t need your tweets,” said a Ukrainian medic on the front lines, speaking anonymously. “We need people who will stand beside us and stop tyranny in its tracks.”
Volunteer Risks and Requirements
While Ukraine continues to appeal for help, officials stress that joining the war is not a casual decision. Volunteers are required to undergo background checks, sign formal contracts, and adhere to military law.
Organizations like the International Legion, Task Force Yankee, and Project Konstantin help coordinate the safe passage and training of willing foreigners.
The U.S. State Department, however, has issued repeated advisories against traveling to Ukraine due to the extreme dangers involved.
