The US has experienced a dramatic increase in antisemitic acts, hitting a record high after the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, as reported by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). In the period between October 2023 and September 2024, more than 10,000 acts were documented, which is a 200% surge from last year. This is a record high since the ADL started monitoring antisemitism in 1979.
The document cites 8,015 incidences of written or verbal harassment, 1,840 acts of destruction of property, and 150 physical attacks. The most recorded cases were in California, New York, New Jersey, and Florida. The increase comes at a time when Middle Eastern tensions are still driving violent talk and protests, with numerous antisemitic incidents being witnessed in anti-Israel protests.
The ADL anticipates that the figures will continue to grow as more data is gathered and a final report will be released in 2025. The surge in antisemitism follows growing anti-Muslim incidents, which also hit all-time highs in 2023.
