China Should Open Its Markets

📍 Washington, D.C. – May 9, 2025

U.S. President Donald J. Trump issued a strong statement today, calling on China to remove restrictions on American companies and allow fair trade access. Speaking through his social platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote,
“CHINA SHOULD OPEN UP ITS MARKET TO USA — WOULD BE SO GOOD FOR THEM!!!! CLOSED MARKETS DON’T WORK ANYMORE!!!”

Later, addressing reporters outside his Florida residence, Trump floated the idea of implementing steep tariffs if China continues to deny equal market access to the U.S. economy.

“They need us more than we need them. If they don’t want to open up, we’ll charge them like never before — 80% tariffs aren’t off the table,” he said.

The remarks arrive amid a tense economic standoff between the two global powers. Under Trump’s leadership, tariffs on Chinese goods were already raised, and recent developments suggest the U.S. may be preparing for even more aggressive trade policies if negotiations do not progress.

Sources close to the matter suggest upcoming international meetings may involve American officials pushing for more transparency and reciprocity in trade agreements with China.

Trump’s comments also spark fresh debate among economists and global trade observers, particularly as speculation grows about his potential campaign in the 2028 presidential election.
