The world-famous satellite internet service provider Starlink, owned by tech businessman Elon Musk, officially commences operations in Bangladesh. The news was confirmed by the company this Tuesday morning through a social media post on platform X (formerly Twitter).
Starlink is beginning in Bangladesh with two service plans: Starlink Residence and Residence Lite. The respective monthly charges for these plans are BDT 6,000 and BDT 4,200. Nevertheless, customers will have to pay an initial setup equipment charge of BDT 47,000.
The service, as reported by the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), is available with no data or speed cap. Individual customers will be able to access unlimited data of up to 300 Mbps speeds.
Bangladeshi customers can order starting today. Fayez Ahmad Tayyab, the Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, confirmed the opening of Starlink’s services in Bangladesh. He mentioned that on Monday afternoon, Starlink officials contacted him by phone call, and the next morning an official announcement came on their social media account.
He said that two packages—Starlink Residence and Residence Lite—have been launched in the first phase with a monthly charge of BDT 6,000 and BDT 4,200, respectively. The customers need to pay BDT 42,000 (note: there is a minor inconsistency with previous figure of 47,000) for the setup device to access the service. The service does not have any data cap or speed limit, and speeds are allowed up to 300 Mbps.
“From today, customers in Bangladesh can start ordering Starlink service,” said Fayez Ahmad Tayyab. “With this, the Chief Advisor’s expectation of launching the service within 90 days has been successfully realized.”
He added that even though the service is comparatively costly, it offers a high-end and seamless high-speed internet service for Bangladesh’s premium consumers. Specifically, NGOs, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in regions where there is no fiber connectivity or speedy internet will gain a lot from this service.
Fayez Ahmad Tayyab quoted that the Chief Advisor praised all who made the endeavor a success.
With the entry in Bangladesh, Starlink has entered a new market in South Asia and has the potential to provide high-speed internet connectivity to remote and unconnected areas of the nation.
