Public Backlash Mounts Against Mike Pence: Critics Accuse Former VP of Hypocrisy and Dangerous Rhetoric

Washington, D.C., May 2025 — Former Vice President Mike Pence continues to face growing public criticism following a recent series of appearances and comments that many say reflect a shift toward inflammatory rhetoric and religious contradictions.

In a now-viral social media post that encapsulates a widespread sentiment, one user wrote:
“Your time to have influence in decisions passed in 2016. You’re washed up — and only fueling the side of violence and lies. Thought you were a religious man? If you were, you’d realize you’re speaking in tongues and now a vessel of Satan.”

While harsh, the comment echoes a broader frustration voiced by critics from across the political and religious spectrum. Many argue that Pence, once viewed as a calm and devout political figure, has drifted into increasingly divisive and radical territory since leaving office.

From Calm Conservatism to Firebrand Messaging

Once celebrated by the evangelical right for his calm demeanor, Pence has, in recent months, taken a harder public line on issues such as immigration, gender identity, and “traditional values.” His rhetoric, critics argue, no longer reflects the civility and spiritual integrity he was once known for.

Religious scholar Dr. Angela Carmichael, who has studied the political rise of religious conservatives, said, “Pence once symbolized the blend of faith and governance. But today, his messaging resembles apocalyptic zeal more than thoughtful conservatism. Many former supporters are asking whether he’s abandoned the humility that made him stand out.”

Public Discontent and Accusations of Hypocrisy

Beyond theology, Pence’s political relevance has come into question. Many critics argue his influence peaked during the Trump administration, and that his continued appearances feel more like attempts to stay in the spotlight than contributions to public discourse.

“He had a moment to take a moral stand — especially after January 6,” said Tom Phillips, a moderate Republican from Ohio. “But now? He’s just trying to rewrite his legacy, and it’s not working. The public sees through it.”

Indeed, Pence’s attempt to walk a tightrope between Trump loyalists and mainstream conservatives has alienated both sides. Trump’s base has never fully forgiven him for certifying the 2020 election, while moderates see his new messages as fear-mongering and desperate.

Evangelical Voices Turning Away?

Perhaps most striking is the growing number of evangelical voices expressing concern. Once a pillar of Pence’s support, many within the faith community are speaking out.

Reverend Lisa Torres of Michigan’s First Baptist Church said during a recent sermon, “If your words incite fear instead of hope, division instead of healing, you’ve lost the gospel. Politics should not be an idol — not even for a former Vice President.”

Online forums that once praised Pence are now filled with posts questioning his sincerity and accusing him of using religion as a shield rather than a guide.

What Comes Next?

While Pence has not formally announced plans to re-enter public office, he continues to tour conservative events and speak on podcasts and Christian media platforms. His team denies any pivot toward extremism, stating in a recent press release:
“Vice President Pence remains committed to his faith, his country, and the principles that have always guided his service.”

But for many, the damage is done. As one pastor anonymously wrote in a widely shared op-ed, “When a man uses God to sell fear, he’s not leading. He’s misleading.”
