Mike Pompeo Warns Against Recognizing Russian Land Grabs in Ukraine

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered a compelling speech at the Black Sea Security Forum in Odesa on May 31, 2025, cautioning against any moves to legitimize Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories. Pompeo emphasized that acknowledging Russia’s claims over regions like Crimea would be “a mistake of epic proportions,” urging the international community to uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. A Firm Stand on Ukraine’s Sovereignty

Pompeo reiterated the U.S. stance from the 2018 Crimea Declaration, which rejected Russia’s claims over Ukrainian territory acquired by force. He stressed that conceding any part of Ukraine to Russia would undermine international law and embolden further aggression. “This is one of the things I hope to communicate,” Pompeo stated, highlighting the importance of a unified response to Russia’s actions. Critique of Past U.S. Actions

Reflecting on the events leading up to the current conflict, Pompeo expressed regret that the United States did not do more to deter Russia’s aggression in 2014 and 2022. He acknowledged that despite diplomatic efforts, the lack of decisive action allowed Russia to proceed with its plans. “I regret that there was not more done in 2014, that there was not more done in 2022, and that deterrence was lost,” Pompeo remarked. A Call for Continued Support

Pompeo emphasized that the United States cannot afford to abandon Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. He warned that conceding to Russia’s demands would have long-term consequences for global security and the principles of sovereignty and democracy. “There is no walking away from this for the United States,” he asserted, highlighting the broader implications of the conflict.
