France’s civil aviation administration asked airlines to reduce flights by 40% in Paris-Orly airport on Sunday evening after air traffic control systems failed.

The government body, known as DGAC, declared that some “regulation” had to be undertaken involving a significant reduction in the number of flights. The statement did not mention the cause of the disruption.

DGAC said its staff “are fully mobilized to restore normal functioning as quickly as possible.”

Paris-Orly airport services domestic and international flights, including to much of Europe and the U.S.

Flights to Spain, Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Ireland and many French cities were canceled on Sunday and many others were postponed.

Over 33 million travelers passed through Paris-Orly airport in one year ago, roughly half the number of Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle, based on statistics released by the operator Aeroport de Paris.
