Trump Administration Moves to Lift Drilling Restrictions in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve

The Trump administration has announced plans to rescind Biden-era protections on approximately 13 million acres within Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve (NPR-A), a 23-million-acre expanse of federal land on the state’s North Slope. This move aims to reopen vast areas to oil and gas drilling, reversing restrictions implemented in 2024 to safeguard wildlife habitats and Indigenous communities.(Reuters)

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the Biden administration’s 2024 rule exceeded its authority under the 1976 Naval Petroleum Reserves Production Act, which designated the NPR-A to support America’s energy security through responsible development. Burgum emphasized that the rollback aligns with the legislative intent of the Act and removes obstacles to energy production. (Spectrum Local News, U.S. Department of the Interior)

The decision is part of President Trump’s broader strategy to boost domestic energy production and reduce regulatory barriers. The administration argues that unlocking Alaska’s natural resources will enhance national economic and energy security. (Financial Times, Spectrum Local News)

Environmental groups and some Indigenous communities have expressed strong opposition to the rollback, citing concerns about potential impacts on sensitive Arctic ecosystems and traditional lifestyles. They warn that increased drilling could threaten wildlife habitats and exacerbate climate change. (The Guardian)

The Department of the Interior has opened a public comment period on the proposed changes, with final action expected later this year. The outcome will significantly influence the future of energy development and environmental conservation in Alaska.(Alaska Beacon)
